I can't say that there isn't any value in watching this, the animation alone is a reason to want to continue. The other girl is Ogata's ex-girlfriend, Ayano Yuugiri and the only thing she's been good for so far is fanservice and her having the best design out of everyone so far. She's a powerful demon that's currently in high school and has a huge crush on Ogata.
Kisara looks like a yandere and happens to be a yandere. They both bounce off of Ogata very well and manage to deal with his nonsense, but in terms of them being individuals, they're pretty flat, not literally though. "Engage Kiss" does a really good job of hooking you into his backstory, but even when it's first introduced it feels so random and forced. "Without him, the city wouldn't exist" or whatever. He's lazy, indecisive, and overall an unlikable protagonist that we're supposed to root for, but the anime presents him in such a positive light. Out of the three that are listed as main characters, the only one that has interested me is Ogata, and even then he's not a character to root for. That's when I say the characters themselves aren't interesting in the slightest. If I were to give "Engage Kiss" the benefit of the doubt, maybe its first few episodes are just the characters dipping their toes into a potential conflict. Is it a slapstick comedy that focuses on poor guy Shuu Ogata and his high school demon friend Kisara? Is it a deeper story about finding memories and creating new ones that are more powerful? Throw in a tasteless joke about sexual assault and you have a show with an identity crisis. Unfortunately, "Engage Kiss" doesn't know what it wants to be. That's all I really have to say for the positives though. You get a good feel for who they are from how they were designed. The fight scenes are satisfying to look at, especially the air fight in the third episode. Getting the obvious point out of the way, the animation is absolutely gorgeous.
I'm unsure of the overall history of the creation of the anime, but I can say that the product so far has been a bit draining. "Engage Kiss" is advertised as a slap-stick comedy and an original property by A-1 Pictures. No qualms here.ĭespite not having any source material to improve on, Engage Kiss offers a fun and enjoyable viewing experience for many types of fans. The ending, while not quite as engaging, is great as well. Halca delivers an amazing opening that fits the show extremely well and is a pleasure to the ears. Clearly, a lot of works goes into the show's animation, and you can see it with every action sequence. There isn't anything bad to say about the art or animation, it's incredible if you aren't the type to nitpick frames. It's a great mix of rom-com and fantasy with some sci-fi aspects in it as well, and a level of mystery as the show slowly teaches viewers about the past of the three main characters. The show's synopsis doesn't do it enough justice, as the story behind Engage Kiss is not as simple as it sounds. Shuu, the MC, may not be enjoyable for some at first, but he is undoubtedly a good character who will likely take some time to grow onto viewers. Ayano and Kisara are guaranteed to be fan-favorites, especially among those who enjoy rom-coms. While most of the characters can be reduced down to a simple trope, they're unique enough to be entertaining and add to the plot. however, if you can stick around for a bit to learn the story it's the furthest from an issue.
As for the controversy, many may be put off by the MC and how he comes off The colors pop out and you can see that with every frame and action sequence. On top of that, "Darekare Scramble" by Halca is a must-hear opening and is easily in contention for the best of the season. What happens when you take a unique plot and give it super basic characters? Such is Engage Kiss, which has somehow generated more controversy than "My Stepmom's Daughter Is My Ex" airing in the same season.įirst things first, the animation is incredible and the character designs are far from poor.
